Ring-billed Gulls under scrutiny

Ring-billed Gulls are part of our environment but they are appreciated by some people and hated by others. In 2009, a group of researchers initiated a study on the ecology of this species in the Montreal area to understand their feeding behaviour, movements during the breeding and post-breeding periods, their exposure to contaminants, and their population dynamics. The research is still on-going and the results have shown that Ring-billed Gull is a useful indicator of the state of the environment. A better understanding of its ecology is essential for proposing management measures that would allow humans and gulls to live side by side.
